The Lakeland Advantage

Lakeland Credit Union Bursary Program

Bursaries, in the amount of $1,000 each, are provided every year to a maximum of ten students in the Lakeland who wish to pursue post secondary education.

Applications are available at both Bonnyville and Cold Lake branches and are supplied to all high schools in the Bonnyville, Cold Lake and Glendon areas in March of each year. Download a (pdf) version of the submission form here.

The Board of Directors selects the recipients based on the following criteria:

  1. Credit Union Membership – Candidates must be members in good standing of Lakeland Credit Union Ltd. for at least 6 months prior to the application date OR parents/guardians must have been members in good standing for one year prior to the application date.
  2.  Education – Candidates must have received (or be eligible to receive during the year of application) a valid Alberta High School Diploma.
  3. Official Statement of Marks – All candidates must supply an official statement of all high school credit courses to date.
  4. Essay – Candidates must submit an essay of 500 words or less describing their leadership, community/school involvement, educational and future goals, and academic achievement.
  5. Letter of Recommendation – Candidates must supply at least two letters of recommendation, one of which shall preferably be from their school principal, teacher, or professor/instructor and the other from a community involvement group leader or an employer, if the applicant has a part-time job.
  6. Selection Criteria – The bursaries will be awarded based on a number of factors; which include leadership, community/school involvement, educational and future goals, academic achievement, essay, and letters of recommendation as noted below.  (Candidates may only receive this award once.)

Successful recipients may enroll in any recognized and accredited post secondary institution in Canada to study on a full-time basis.  Recipients are to provide proof of enrolment (in the form of a tuition receipt) and must agree to have their name and graduation photo published.

The Board of Directors’ decision is final and is not open to debate.  Applications and accompanying documentation will not be returned to the applicants.
